ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION MINISTRYSpecial Education Ministry is a Christ-centered community where volunteers and adults with developmental disabilities come together to grow in faith, friendship, and fellowship.
Every Tuesday evening during the Hope College school year, we gather at Third Reformed Church in Holland, MI from 6:00–7:00 PM. Our evenings are filled with worship, Bible study, meaningful conversations, fun activities, and, of course, snacks! Each gathering is designed to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued and included. At SEM, our mission is to build strong relationships, nurture spiritual growth, and create a supportive, loving community. Through shared experiences, laughter, and learning, we aim to encourage each individual to grow closer to God and to one another. |
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Special Education Ministries began with one parent’s heartfelt hope — that his son could have a place to gather with like-minded individuals and grow in his understanding of God. In 1968, Bill Parlburg, then a student at Western Theological Seminary, responded to this vision by bringing people together for an evening of community and fellowship designed for individuals with disabilities.
What started with just seven students and a focus on one-on-one relationships between teachers and learners has since blossomed into a ministry serving more than 60 students. Thanks to the dedication of our many volunteers, SEM continues to uphold its founding vision: fostering meaningful connections and striving to ensure every student experiences the joy of personal, faith-centered relationships.
